Senior Companion Program

Overview

Senior Companions serve as friendly visitors, providing assistance to seniors who are lonely and have difficulty with daily living tasks. You’ll be providing friendship, emotional support, and transportation for errands. Senior Companions also provide respite to family caregivers who benefit from getting time for themselves.

Who can be a Senior Companion Volunteer?

  • 55 years of age or over
  • Willing to serve a minimum of 15 hours per week
  • Meet the Program’s low-income requirement
  • Physically and emotionally able to assume the responsibilities of a Senior Companion volunteer
  • Able to provide transportation to clients

Program Goals

Provide friendly visitor and peer support

Assist with shopping and errands

Provide transportation to critical social and health appointments

Be the eyes and ears to professionals who can intervene in case of medical, or other, decline in functioning

Ease loneliness and social isolation for homebound seniors and their caregivers

Benefits of Being a Senior Companion Volunteer

  • Receive a tax-exempt stipend for your volunteer service totaling between $200 and $300 a month. The stipend payments are not counted as income, and do not impact eligibility calculations for federal or state entitlements like Social Security, MediCal, MediCare, HUD housing, etc.
  • Reimbursement for mileage for driving related to volunteer service
  • A $2 a day lunch stipend
  • Pre-placement training
  • Monthly training that includes lunch
  • Stipend payments for Holidays and Paid Time Off
