Helping Seniors Overcome the Digital Divide
Dozens of seniors have received Internet-connected devices for the first time, allowing them to bridge the “digital divide” and connect with friends, family, and services from home. More than 120 iPads with 10GB data plans have been distributed to eligible Santa Cruz and San Benito County residents.
The Seniors Council and its San Benito County Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC), in partnership with the California Department of Aging’s Connections, Health, Aging, & Technology (CHAT) and Digital Connectivity (DC) Programs, worked to identify and connect with older adults living in the two counties who could benefit from the iPad tablet devices, as well as from access to high-speed Internet connections. Older adults living in rural areas, or who have other factors precenting them from accessing the Internet, often struggle with feelings of isolation. By bringing digital connectivity into their homes, these programs have empowered seniors to share their knowledge and feel more connected and engaged.
Data plans have been included along with the devices to reduce the burden on eligible seniors’ budgets. Although the original data plans will not continue past the end of this calendar year, both groups of program participants can apply for a $30 monthly subsidy towards purchasing a high-speed Internet connection through the Federal Communications Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).
A very limited number of iPads and data plans remain to be distributed by the end of this year. If you are interested in applying, or for more information on the ADRC or other digital literacy and supportive technology programs benefiting seniors and people with disabilities, please contact Britt Bassoni at (831) 688-0400 x.113 or brittb@seniorscouncil.org.
